Windows registry is constantly being written and updated whenever you are using your computer, in the long run, it gets fragmented and subsequently slows down the entire system. Unlike your hard disk, you are able to defrag it with the defrag tool, however, this defrag tool is limited to files and folders and not meant for the registry.

Quicksys RegDefrag is a freeware utility to defrag registry. It optimizes registry by removing gaps, fragments and wasted space in Windows registry files. This allows a smaller registry and better seeking time. The good news is, Quicksys RegDefrag is compatible with Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 and is free.

Depending on the health of your system, it is advisable to defrag your hard disk and registry once every six months. It has been proven that defragmentation improves performance and boosts access to the registry.

Based on my own experience, there is probably a significant improvement, since my system is rather new, it is hard to tell. However, based on my past experience, it works.
