Nu Era Windows

So what does Diablo Swing Orchestra sound like? I figured I’d get this question out of the way from the get go because I know no matter what wordy description I give to describe the music, all of you will be wondering “is it swing?” My simple answer to this question is yes. As a matter of fact, Diablo Swing Orchestra is not only a swing band, but an act with influences from opera, tango, salsa, oompa and other folk sounds; this is not some metal impersonator trying to sound “different.” So why am I writing about a swing band on a metal site? Well, DSO isn’t your average swing band, because DSO plays swing with metal licks. DSO’s latest album, No. 2 could potentially be the most original metal album I have ever heard in recent memory.
When I first popped No. 2 into my CD player, I assumed that it would be a bunch of hacks with a gimmick, but what I was presented with was so much more. No. 2 is mature piece of avant garde music that breaks more genre barriers than I have heard previously, including many jazz acts! This is NOT a nu-metal album trying to go Motorgrator on us, and I am so relieved as a result.
Imagine your favorite B level celebrities on that shitty dance show breaking out the tango…only with metal riffs instead of non-confrontational acoustic guitar. I have never heard anything quite like No. 2, and I relish in moments of surprise as a critic, because they rarely really happen. My enjoyment of this record could be because I am fond of big band era music, which includes classic swing, not that “Mambo #5″ crap from the 90’s, but I really believe that many metal fans will get a kick out of this album because of its sheer originality. I base this assumption on the newfound popularity of Volbeat in the U.S. over the past year. Volbeat and DSO really have much in common in terms of bringing in a strong non-metal presence in such a way that makes the metal portions very sharp and apparent. DSO is sheer catchy madness, much as Volbeat shares, and I highly doubt that there was any other intention by the band to create anything more than a fun, original frolic for their listeners.
I highly recommend this album to ANY fan of metal, just to experience it. It could turn out that you absolutely despise DSO’s sound, but you have to at least check out No. 2, because there is nothing in the metal world that compares. Diablo Swing Orchestra has opened up a whole new reality, and I think I want to dive in head first to experience more!
