Adding wooden window blinds to your home can really make a difference in the overall feel. Window blinds add an element of sophistication, privacy, and comfort. The blinds also protect your home’s furniture from the sun. Prolonged sun exposure can fade your furniture out and destroy the fabric over time. Before you can use window blinds, whether it be for some home renovations or for a new house, you must first be able to measure so that you have enough space to install them. Below is a guide for made to measure wooden blinds.
The first thing you need to remember when measuring for window blinds is to be precise. You always must use a steel tape measure and never a cloth tape measure. Remember to measure all sizes to the nearest eighth of an inch to avoid errors that can snowball. Do not be alarmed if the windows are not perfectly square because in most cases this is normal. Make sure to clearly state which measurement is the height and which measurement is the width on your notes. It is very common to mix these measurements up so keep a journal. Always measure the height and then the width.
There are two different types of mounting types, and inside mount and an outside mount. It is recommended that you go with an inside mount because it looks neater. When measuring an inside mount it is important to take the exact widow size opening and not to take a deduction. Manufacturers deduct 3/8” to ½” so there is no need to take a further deduction. Measure width and height in three different places. After you have taken this measurement, then write down the narrowest width and the longest height.
In order to make sure that the outside mount is measured properly and to ensure there is the least amount of light gapes you will have to add 4 or 5 inches to each side of the blinds for vertical blinds, or 1 to 1 ½” for horizontal blinds. You also have to leave room for the mounting brackets which are 1 to 3 inches tall in most cases. You do not want to have any deductions so it is important to write down the exact width and exact height.
A wooden blind can make all the difference in your home. Whether you get something standard or something more fancy (like wooden venetian blinds), your home will look spectacular. Now that you have this information, it is time to start measuring your windows today.

With this type mount, the installation brackets are attached to the ceiling. In order to achieve this, hold the head rail against the ceiling and once again, lower the shade to check for correct length and to ensure that the blind will clear any obstacles. While holding the head rail against the ceiling, lightly mark the position of the head rail slots. Now hold an installation bracket against the ceiling and mark it for two diagonal screw holes. Position these brackets so they line up with the centres of the slots in the head rail then drill pilot holes and use the appropriate screws to mount the brackets. After drilling the holes, push the head rail onto the brackets so the threaded posts on the brackets fit through the slots in the head rail, then tighten all screws and fasteners to secure the head rail to the installation brackets.
When hanging roman blinds outside the window frame, keep in mind that the roman blind is designed to extend beyond the window opening. To mount roman blinds with this type of mount, mount the installation brackets to the window frame or to the wall. With the head rail level, lower the blind and check the length of the blind as well as any obstructions that may be in the way of the blind working properly. With the head rail held level in position on the window frame or wall, mark the position of the slots with a pencil. After marking the position of the head rail, mark the position of the screws in the installation bracket by holding them in place. These brackets should line up with the centres of the slots in the head rail. Now drill pilot holes and install the fastener screws into the pilot holes. Position the head rail into the brackets so the threaded posts on the brackets fit through the slots in the head rail. To complete the installation, attach the head rail to the installation brackets by tightening all fasteners.
